Why We Do This:
The North American prairie once covered over a million square miles but is now reduced to fragments. The ability of the prairie to provide habitat, store carbon in its biomass, and build soil means restoring and preserving these ecosystems is an excellent way to reduce our impact on the planet.
As residents of an urban environment, few of us can become stewards of extensive prairie restoration. Still, we can help by shifting away from traditional landscaping and embracing our native flora.
The plants commonly used in traditional landscaping, like those available at box stores, may look pretty, but few benefit our native ecology, and many tend to spread beyond our yards to become a nuisance.
Pint-sized Prairies can thrive in urban environments, creating resilient ecosystems that resist drought and salt. With a Pint-Sized Prairie, you'll be restoring a small amount of our native habitat and making a sustainable impact in your neighborhood.
